A few months back we started stocking Soap Nuts. And ill hold my hands up right now, until we had them in stock i've been collecting bags of them under the kitchen sink that have landed on my lap via various sources (sorry mum!) without me ever even considering putting them in the wash drawer! I mean they look like little rock hard cat poo so how could these wash our clothes?!
Well let me tell you, I try everything we stock (well everything that is vegan) and I cant believe how much money I have wasted over the years on toxin free washing detergent!!! Im just gutted i didnt give them a whirl sooner! I mean im a big believer in not judging a book by its cover and from now on ill extend that to everything because i cant express how bloody good they are! And even Steve is a convert too and will openly admit he was standing in the wings waiting for them to fail.
So for those of you that don't know what Soap Nuts are, heres a little bit of background bumph!...
Soapnuts are greatly valued by people of rural India, primarily for washing clothes but also as a naturally produced shampoo for washing hair and for getting rid of dandruff.
They grow in the Himalayas on the Sapindus Mukorossi Tree (also known as the Soap Berry Tree) and they are a berry shell that naturally contains soap.
Inside the berry shells is a natural soap called saponin which is a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant. Surfactants breaking the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibres of your clothing, then lift the stains from the fabric, and leave dirt suspended in the water that then is rinsed away.
Soapnuts are extremely gentle but highly effective and can be used on all fabrics and at all temperatures from 30. C - 90. C and are great for all washing machines. They leave your laundry clean and fresh and in comparison to other powder detergents, they are very mild which is great news for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin, eczema and psoriasis. They are also perfect for babies clothes and cloth nappies. Apart from stopping the itch and irritation, mildness also keeps colours bright and maintains fabric structure of your clothes for longer which make your clothes last longer.
So with longer lasting clothes and 75 washes for just £3.99 (including the muslin bag) in a small cupboard space saving packet, Soap Nuts tick all the boxes for all round cost saving!
I wouldn't switch now. Im a Soap Nut for life!
Hands down the best tool a domestic goddess can own.
