Its bluey-green, its an algae (well that sounds rather gross doesnt it!) but it really is the plant version of a multivitamin and deserves the title of the superfood king!
So whats so amazing about it?
Spirulina maybe unheard of by many but its no secret to the Japanese and its been used there medicinally for thousands of years. It is quite possibly the most nutritious of all the superfoods on the market place and being available in easy to mix powder or 100% pressed tablets, its one of the easiest to incorporate into the diet of even the busiest of people.
There are an absolute boat load of reasons to love Spirulina but to save a war and peace worthy blog post word count, here are a few quick interesting facts about this wonderful micro-algae!....
YOU COULD SURVIVE ON JUST WATER & SPIRULINA!
Spirulina is so rich in nutrients that you could survive on it and water alone! In fact Spirulina is one of the oldest forms of life on the planet and it had a big part to play in creating our atmosphere billions of years ago. NASA Send it up to space with the astronauts now to ensure they get their nutrients and its great news if there is ever an apocalypse and your hiding place has a bag but in reality you really wouldn't want to just consume algae and water to survive! Used alongside our normal diets, Spirulina balances out many of the deficiencies we suffer from in our busy, diet varying and often nutrient deficient lives these days!
IT HAS 26 TIMES MORE CALCIUM THAN MILK!
I dont need to tell you how important calcium is! Spirulina is a good superfood for anyone with a calcium deficiency and calcium is essential for more than just bones. It regulates muscle contractions including the most important one of all, the heartbeat and is essential for ensuring the blood clots normally.
IT HAS 10 TIMES MORE BETA CAROTENE THAN CARROTS!
This makes it a super antioxidant and so a real warrior against Free Radicals which is great news for the fight against anti ageing and Cancer. In fact the National Cancer Institute have recommended we take 6mg of Beta Carotene daily to reduce the risk of cancer and you will find the 6mg you need in just half a teaspoon of Spirulina!
IT HAS 5 TIMES MORE PROTEIN THAN MEAT!
Oooh the big plant / meat war!! But Spirulina really can fight its corner up against its meat comparative. It is the highest known plant based protein on the planet and the staple food for many ancient populations such as the Aztecs because of this. Additionally the protein comes without high levels of cholesterol which can be an issue for many and it is more readily and easily absorbable by the body than its meat counterparts meaning all the goodness without the extra work for your digestive system.
IT CONTAINS ALL THE ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS!
Which are called essential as they are needed for all our metabolic processes and their key tasks are the transporting and storing of all our nutrients (even down to water) Many major diseases such as diabetes, arthritis can be traced back to metabolic disturbances along with hair loss, wrinkle formation and erectile dysfunction! Amino Acids have never seemed so essential eh!
IT BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM!
Spirulina is best know for being an immune system tonic. You will hear me talking about the importance of the immune system alot but it is central to being healthy. The immune system is like the security guards of your body. Anything that keeps them boosted and ready to fight anything that attacks is a must have in the diet.
IT FIGHTS CANCER!
In addition to the high levels of beta carotene already mentioned above, Spirulina has large quantities of Phycocyanin which has been proven to stop Cancer colonies forming. If the colonies stop forming our immune systems have a chance at fighting the cancer cells before they have a chance to gain the upper hand. It also has a lot of chlorophyll which has been shown to prevent cancer by binding with and then stimulating the excrection of cancer causing chemicals. Algae 1 // Cancer Zero!
GREAT FOR ANEMIA!
Studies in menstrual and menopausal women show that in both groups Haemoglobin levels increased after taking Spirulina as Anemia is caused when the levels of Haemoglobin in the blood are low. Spirulina is a great preventative boost for ladies especially around those wonderous days of the month (ahem) and anyone suffering with Anemia generally.
HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL?
In our experience and many of our customers it gives a boost that can't be obviously felt if you were to compare it to caffeine for instance. Theres no peaks or dips, just an alertness that's a welcome break to most of us these days. Long days at work, travelling etc is all made a little better by Spirulina. And for us, the powder is fab and many of us love a Green Beam with a scoop of Spirulina, however we find its can be more convenient to use the tablets for everyday use.
IS IT FOR EVERYONE?
Spirulina is a must for most as long as its well sourced. Cheap brands with an unknown source can be grown in the far eastern sea which can be contaminated and impure. Always check how and where the Spirulina you buy is produced.
Additionally, Spirulina isn't recommend for anyone suffering with an auto immune disease as it stimulates the immune system which could worsen the symptoms. Anyone with kidney issues should be careful on keeping daily usage to a minimum due to the high nutrient content and if you fall under any of the medical conditions above and aren't sure, its always advisable to check with your doctor prior to starting Spirulina.
